Tea Wayfarer and Tea Spirit

Picture
In June 2017, Global Tea Hut published an article in their monthly Tea and Tao magazine that included 8 paintings and reflections I had made, inspired by their monthly tea sharing subscription. You can see that article here (pages 54-57 "Art of the Month") as Global Tea Hut considers their work an offering to the world and make their magazine's past issues available for free online.

In that same issue I was also featured as the Tea Wayfarer of the month, a section of the magazine where they introduce people in the community. I've copied it for you here in case you are interested in my tea story.

5 Ideas for Processing the Past and Funding the Future

"When we process, we sort through all the raw material in the psyche, all the things we've learned, heard, longed for, and felt during a period of time. We break these processed ideas and energies to implement our most soulful tasks and to fund our various creative endeavors."
-Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run with the Wolves

Processing is what I call what I do when I finish a book and go back through it looking at what I've highlighted or starred or pages I've marked down. Then I sort the stories or quotes into word documents or journals or letters.

I also say I'm processing when I've come back from a trip or workshop and have handouts or photos to go through and share or commemorate in art.

And finally I say processing for what I do with my word of the year at the end of a year, seeing all the messages I've received, reviewing my year, preparing for the next one.

So that's what I would like to offer you.

Creativity and Consuming

Picture
I'm in the beginning of my third 100 day practice (or if you allow me to break up the 366 practice I also did, my 6th).

It is amazing so far!
25 brave and courageous souls are on the journey with me and I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful it is to travel together for the inspiration and encouragement and accountability and grace.

One of the things I am trying to be conscious of during this 100 days is consuming less.

Creativity and the Power of Your Story: Tales from a 2nd Place Master Builder

Picture
I was at my 2nd Brick Fiesta, a LEGO fan convention with a public exhibition, and this story almost didn't happen because I thought it was already too late to enter the Master Builder Contest Game because I had missed Heat 1. My husband then kindly explained to me about preliminary rounds vs. final rounds, and thus our story begins.

Creativity Bears Pear-Shaped Fruit

On May 1, 2016, the day before the deadline to enter, I submitted an application for the city of Pearland's Pear-Scape, a public art sculpture trail project.

If you've seen the pelicans in Seabrook or any of the cow parade cows, that's what this is.

Giant fiberglass pears (4 feet high and 38 inches wide) that would be sponsored, painted by different artists, and then installed around the city of Pearland.

I was supposed to know by the end of May 2016 if any of my proposed pear designs had been selected, and then I was to have from the beginning of June to mid-August to paint my pear.
My three proposed pear designs

Well, I was never chosen.

2016 Review Part 8 of 8

Picture
"But then someone starts talking about your soul - maybe at church, maybe in a book. Someone starts talking about things like grace and rest and peace, and the soul feeling its worth, and that language feels so foreign and so beautiful, like water in a desert, like one bright bud pushing up in an otherwise arid landscape. And like a song you used to love but haven't heard for years, something breaks through: that's what I've been missing. That's it. My soul." -Shauna Niequist

This year was about my soul healing and playing and leading, and that totally surprised me.

2016 Review Part 6 of 8

Picture
Inspiration came in so many forms this year. Honestly because I'm interested in so many things, I had times of a little too much inspiration to the point of feeling overwhelmed. I have to keep remembering to keep my input strength in check and keep an eye on perfectionism. Here's some things that inspired my in 2016:

2016 Review Part 5 of 8

Failure is a part of daring greatly. And don't get me wrong failure sucks, but it actually does get easier. You learn to not take it personally, you learn how to Rise Strong and recognize where you might have shame that needs an antidote.

Here are some of my failures in 2016 and what I learned:

2016 Review Part 2 of 8

Picture
As a psychotherapist I always said I never wanted to have a private practice, it felt like too much responsibility to me. I knew where I was wasn’t working for me though, and I took a leap. And with a lot of help and support, I founded my own business, Daring Discoveries, PLLC. But first it was Daring Discoveries, LLC until I realized I couldn’t do that legally since I am a licensed professional (thus the P stands for Professional), that wasn’t a scary moment or anything. But that’s why we are not alone and have friends and a dear colleague Leah McCoy directed me to a resource who was able to walk me through the paperwork to change my legal status so I didn’t have to scrap my business before I even started.

2016 Review Part 1 of 8

"You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine"

and spend more time playing hooky
and spontaneous dancing in daylight."

Creativity and Public Speaking

366 Days of Building Creativity Week 42 in Review: October 14th-20th

Where do you allow yourself to be creative?

I realized this week that I had certain places I allowed creativity and then in some areas, I was still relying on my the old constructs of perfectionism I had constructed to try and keep me safe from criticism.

Public speaking was one of those areas.

Creativity and Your Daily Life

366 Days of Building Creativity Week 41 in Review: October 7th-13th

How do you go through your day?

When you are doing something, are you just trying to get through it, or are you thinking about the next things you need to do, or are you really trying to be present and enjoy the process you are in?

For me, it's usually the former items.

Creativity Forgives

366 Days of Building Creativity Week 40 in Review: September 30th-October 6th

Thankfully, creativity forgives.

It forgives me when I doubted I would be able to come up with enough creations for a whole year.

In fact, it has decided to show me that through my daily commitment, I can now have multiple creation ideas daily.
