9/1/2016 0 Comments Creativity In Layers366 Days of Building Creativity Week 36 in Review: September 2nd-September 8thIn the beginning, I had few LEGO® bricks. Keeping my daily creations would have really limited my future creations so I took each one apart after I took my photo. It was day 51 that I first kept a creation around for a bit, the quote was about painting being unfinished and I heard that my creation may be unfinished. It was also perfect as I was about to go on a trip so I left it and sure enough, when I came back, there was more to be done (4 days to be exact). Then days 116 and 117 happened where I did the same thing and didn't expect to, but with the quote was inspired to build onto the previous day's creation. So because that had happened a couple of times, I started not taking my creations apart on the day I made them. I would at least leave them for the day and take them apart the next day. And it happened a few more times, the layering process. Day 237 and 239 Day 244 and 245 But sometimes I would just not want to take apart bricks or I didn't have much time, or maybe I was kind of attached to a piece, so I would start a little collection. Until it got too cluttered or I was missing some pieces I wanted. That's what happened on Day 242. That creation was actually inspired by Day 240. I was taking apart Day 240 (and a couple of others I believe) and all the colors on it inspired my rainbow. I've heard it said creatives should always leave something to start on the next day, don't ever have your work all wrapped up. That goes against the part of me that wants everything to be complete and orderly and done so I can relax. But I like it. And I'm learning that's how creativity works. It's always growing and using up everything around it. And the pauses, the breaks, the Sabbath, the tea, the sleep happen throughout. Great work takes time and can't be done sometimes in a day (kind of like life) so I've been learning how to stop and pause often instead of thinking I have to get through everything or everything has to be done first. So I keep at least a day out, and whether the piece calls me to change it or build upon it, or the piece inspires me as I dismantle it, my yesterday layer in this journey supports me in the new day. It is there, encouraging me even if it doesn't somehow incorporate or inspire, that I can do today, look, you did yesterday. And you know what, I trust that voice now, I believe it because I've seen it day in and day out. So in response to my very first week in review of this project where I wrote these words: "I still have the negative self-talk, I wonder if it will ever stop. Sure you have turned out some ok creations but how the heck are you going to do 358 more!!! You are going to run out of ideas." Yes, it does stop. If you keep going. If you work on it. If you focus on the fruits. If you start believing in yourself. Eventually you will build layers of self-trust and those will be stronger than the doubts and fears. You love your work by tending to it everyday, and it's got your back. Days 246-252Day 246 "Don't compare yourself with other. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life." -Galatians 6:5 Day 247 "I'm reminded that the true art isn't the thing we can point to - the shop, the barn, the book, the song. The true art is listening to a living God and relating to real people as the person I most deeply am." -Emily Freeman Day 248 "I can smell it already, what color I have on my palette." -Bill Alexander Day 249 "You want to remember the truth about art - it isn't only painting, singing, and dancing, but may also be loving, believing, and relating." -Emily Freeman Day 250 "What happens if someone says you did a great job? Do you bask in their admiration? Or do you redden with embarrassment? Do you mumble and shuffle while inside you are rationalizing away their acclaim? Do you suspect their motives? Do you question their taste? Praise is a gift. Will you accept it with grace? Or are you more comfortable with criticism?" Danny Gregory Day 251 "The way to health is to take an aromatic bath and scented massage every day." -Hippocrates Day 252
"Art is a support system for life, not the other way around." -Stephen King
