Introduction from Self-Compassion Stories
“To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.”
–Oscar Wilde
In 2013, whether it was Saturn gearing up for her first return or just serendipity at its finest, I had some major shifts. First, I attended a therapy conference where Dr. Kristin Neff, the leading researcher on self-compassion, was the headliner. Then, I started working with a psychologist for my anxiety and perfectionism. And finally, I was invited to take an e-course based on Dr. Brené Brown’s book, The Gifts of Imperfection. Not only did that art journaling e-course re-awaken my creativity, but when I learned that cultivating self-compassion was an antidote to perfectionism, I got serious about practicing.
It was a life-changing decision, and I would have never founded my own business, Daring Discoveries, without it. The first event I held in 2016 was a Self-Compassion Mini-Retreat Day. It has become an annual event, mainly because it is my own personal foundation, and I need to make sure to check it for cracks and shoring up. I never expected to write a book on self-compassion. Heck, I never expected to be a writer at all! But in 2019 I published a book based on a personal self-compassion practice I had done: Rooted in Love: A 40-day practice of growing self-compassion in your life and planting seeds of compassion in the world. After publishing two more books and developing as a writer, I decided to revise that book in 2022. It turned into a much bigger project than I ever expected, and it required a ton of self-compassion, but I’m proud to be able to have this more focused and flowing book to offer you.
Each self-compassion story is now accompanied by a drawing and a reflection question, and you are invited to engage with this creative component however you wish. Feel free to use your own journal, color and make marks directly on the book itself, or check out the creative companion resources at www.leeannhilbrich.com/scs. Even just two minutes of commitment to the creative process can lead to profound personal integration and enjoyment. You may also find that spending time writing, doodling, etc. is a great self-compassion practice opportunity. As the critical, comparing, perfectionistic mind inevitably arises, training gently brings you back to the present moment, and to kindness and compassion. Trust that you are a creative being, and that the time spent, regardless of if it looks pleasing to you at the end, is making and strengthening new connections. This is an interactive and potentially life-changing journey to practice alchemizing criticism into compassion, fear into love, and perfectionism into trust.
